Aloe Vera Classification and Products Quality Standards by IASC
Aloe Vera or "true aloe" is the most common and well known name of one particular species of the genus Aloe.
Classification
The molecular studies put Aloe in the order Asparagales. Within Asparagales, it is either in the family Asphodelaceae or the family Xanthorrhoeaceae. What some call Asphodelaceae is treated by others as the subfamily Asphodeloideae of the family Xanthorrhoeaceae.
In the past Aloe Vera has also been assigned to families Aloaceae and Liliaceae or Lily family, but molecular studies based on DNA comparison have shown that it was not correct and it is actually relatively closely related to Aloe perryi, Aloe forbesii, Aloe inermis, Aloe scobinifolia, Aloe sinkatana and Aloe striata.
The proper scientific name is Aloe Vera (L.) Burm. f. The synonyms Aloe barbadensis or Aloe barbadensis (Mill.) or (Miller) are commonly used to refer to Aloe Vera. The species name vera means "true" or "genuine".
Aloe has achieved some other remarkable nicknames from around the world:
- Medicine plant
- Miracle plant
- Silent healer
- Wand of heaven
- Burn plant.
Although the aloe plant looks like a cactus, it is actually a succulent and originated in Northern Africa, the Canary islands and Cape Verde.
Uses
Aloe Vera is traditional anti-inflammatory topical ointment used to fight the inflammation and pain caused by jelly fish stings, insect bites, sunburn and like.
Aloe Vera soothes and cools the inflamed skin, numbs the pain associated with the inflammation and prevents itching.
Aloe Vera is traditional remedy for many digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers and oral lesion.
Additionally, as an abundant source of essential nutrients, Aloe Vera is a nutritional supplement and a detoxifying tonic that revitalized the body.
As a beauty aid, Aloe Vera enhanced the ability to absorb moisture, accordingly revitalizing the skin.
Aloe Vera is one of about 400 or more species of Aloe that most commonly used in consumer products.
Aloe Vera Properties
Aloe Vera has more then 75 known ingredients. The main ingredient is a water (95%) and the rest is Vitamins, Minerals, Enzymes, Amino acids, Sugars, Sterols, Anthraquinones etc.

The IASC (The International Aloe Science Council ), and other countries such as the European Union, China, and Korea, have established standards to define what is (and what is not) "Aloe Vera" in finished products.
The IASC standard states that only products containing acemannan, or the beta 1-4 acetylated glucomannans, can be accurately labeled as Aloe Vera. Acemannan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide that is present in aloe vera and is used as an identifier of the botanical by analytical means.
"Products that do not contain acemannan are not considered to be true Aloe Vera based on this standard."
The IASC developed a program that would allow aloe growers, aloe processors, aloe manufacturers, and aloe marketing companies to have their products certified by the Council.
Companies who use the IASC Seal of Certification on their products and in their literature are assuring their customers:
1. That the Company represents truth in labeling.
2. That the Company represents the quantity in aloe content.
3. That the Company represents the quality of aloe meets with IASC current standards.
4. That the Company represents that the aloe used in the products comes from a certified source.
